Sweet Potato Latkes for the Season of Light

When we were children, my brother and I looked forward to Hanukkah with great anticipation. The excitement was all about opening gifts, because Hanukkah had become the gift-giving time of year for modern Jewish familiesā€”likely because, falling as it did sometime in December, this Jewish holiday always had proximity on the calendar to Christmas. Rick recalls sneaking into the den closet to examine the wrapped presents hidden there. I fondly remember the Hanukkah when I was given my first

Thanksgiving Sides Your Guests Will Never Forget!

For vegetarians and vegans, Thanksgiving is all about the traditional mouth-watering side dishes, and of course, Iā€™m all about making them as healthy as they are delicious!

Today Iā€™ll point to all of my favorite holiday sides and introduce you to a new recipe: Reimagined Green Bean Casserole.

When I was young, in the ā€™50s and ā€™60s, cooking for convenience was all the rage, and there was no cornucopia of fresh vegetables readily available in grocery stores. I canā€™t fault my mother for her frozen spinach with canned mushroom soupā€”though just the thought of it now makes me cringe! Even then, I had no taste for such food. I learned to love vegetables only when I began cooking with my college roommate, Ellen Brock, who grew up picking fresh veggies out of her motherā€™s garden.

But there was nothing wrong with the idea behind my in-laws’ green bean casserole with canned mushroom soup and canned onion rings. The potential is there for a great dish. I invite you to expand your culinary imagination with this recipe.

This Reimagined Green Bean Casserole is a vegan and gluten-free dish made with fresh ingredients: green beans, caramelized onions, fresh almond milk (if available), fresh ginger, and shiitake mushrooms

Best Veggie Burgers!

If you like a good veggie burger, Iā€™m betting youā€™ll love this fresh Vegan Black Bean & Sweet Potato Patties recipe for Memorial Day festivities! Itā€™s easy, itā€™s delicious (of course!) and itā€™s perfect for casual entertaining during these summer months.

I havenā€™t had a real hamburger in about thirty years, and Iā€™ve never truly missed them. However, I do occasionally crave that classic American experience of biting into a bun with a mound of protein, mustard and ketchup! A freshly made veggie burger will more than suffice.

Todayā€™s recipe was inspired by delicious burgers Tom and I ate at The Present Moment CafĆ© in St. Augustine, Florida during an anniversary weekend. The chef may not be familiar with Ayurvedic cuisine, but it was nonetheless brilliant to pair hard-to-digest black beans with soft and grounding sweet potatoes. Iā€™ve added garlic powder, gluten-free asafetida, and cumin to aid digestion.

Holiday Cooking Tips for Modern Lifestyles

As often described in articles about holiday entertaining, it can be challenging because emotional expectations are often so highā€”both your own and your guests. You may be trying to create a picture-perfect event that is a dream come true for your family. When entertaining friends, you may hope to out-do your last kitchen performance. Expectations aside, holiday preparation is particularly daunting for people who work forty-plus hours a week. Double that for working parents. And of course, entertaining is the most stressful for perfectionists, who want their house to be impeccable, their food to be amazing, and who want to look stress-free and gorgeous, even when theyā€™re totally frazzled.

Chasing Perfectionism with a Cookie Update

Perhaps I’ve mentioned that I have a tendency to chase perfectionism. For this very reason, I’m updating my OMG Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe to make it easier for vegans and anyone who avoids eggs.

Just to be clear, this recipe is different from the one I first published during this blogā€™s infancy in February 2015. Ever since, I’ve played with the ingredients, revising it more than once. You’ll find a slightly different version in my 2018 book, Sacred & Delicious: A Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook. Then, just last week, I was baking and packing thank-you cookies for several amazing healthcare practitioners who are helping bring my injured hand back to life. I decided the recipe needed one more tweak to make it more accessible for readers.

A Gluten-Free Vegetarian Guide to Thanksgiving

If you want to plan an intensely flavorful vegetarian menu for Thanksgiving, look no further! Today I’m sharing a recipe for Gluten-Free Millet Dressing. I’ll also point you to my sumptuous versions of traditional American holiday side dishes, which will fill your family with joy and gratitude!

Why millet? Ā Millet is a good source of vegetarian protein. OneĀ cup of cooked millet offers 6 grams of vegetarian, gluten-free protein, which equals the protein in one egg. It’s also filling, grounding and easy to make.

Now for the rest of the menu. My famous Holiday Sweet Potatoes,Ā topped with a pound and a half of pecans, are the eagerly awaited crown jewel of our holiday table.Ā For a dash of freshness and color I offer this cranberry salad, a squeaky clean, upscale version of the canned stuff that used to be served when we were growing up!

Introducing Differentā€”and Delicious!ā€”Gluten-Free Flours

If youā€™ve never tried cooking or baking with ragi flour or tiger nut flourā€”actually made from tubers, not nuts or tigersā€”I guarantee that youā€™ll enjoy these delicious Ragi Blueberry Pancakes.

Ragi is a flour that is widely used in India. Known in the U.S. as finger millet flour, ragi has some natural sweetness and is rich in mineral nutrients,Ā including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and iron,Ā as well as in protein and B vitamins.

Bring on the Dark Chocolate for Valentine’s Day!

If you love dark chocolate and want to splurge a little for Valentineā€™s Day, do I have a treat for you and your belovedā€”perhaps the fudgiest brownies youā€™ve ever tasted! From a health perspective, the good news is that these are not outrageously sweet compared to standard fare, even though Iā€™m told they are sufficiently decadent to stir the passions of any chocolate lover.

First, let me acknowledge what may be obvious to many readers: chocolate, fudge, and brownies are not part of ancient Ayurvedic cuisine. Nonetheless, I believe in adding some flexibility to my offerings so thatĀ people exploring Ayurveda donā€™t feel constrained by too much austerity. As one of my Ayurvedic mentors often says,

Donā€™t panic. Be smart. Stay vigilant.Ā

Dear Ones,

If youā€™re walking around with a pervasive feeling of concern or fear about COVID-19, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to review the tips Iā€™m sharing today for protecting your health and the health of your loved ones. I havenā€™t seen many of these recommendations promoted by the media, government officials, and the dozens of blogs now streaming into my inbox.

Please understand, I am not hitting the panic button. Although there is legitimate cause for concern about the coronavirus, there are many ways to boost your immune systemā€”including the way you manage your food and your use of effective botanical medicines.

Do follow all the CDC guidelines and stay current with their updates. Following these disciplines is the smart thing to do, and the simple act of doing so will help you stay centered. You canā€™t be too vigilant about washing hands thoroughly and often. Be intelligent about social distancing. Beyond this, we all need to eat, and since thatā€™s my passion, let me add my two cents about how to stay safe when it comes to food.
