What Is Pulse Assessment and Why Is It Important?

If you suffer from any kind of chronic pain or illness, it’s invaluable to understand what kind of energetic imbalances may be at the root of your health problems.Ā  A skilled Ayurvedic practitioner can “read” your pulse and get an instant picture of your doshas, a Sanksrit word that refers to the energetic organizing principles of all life. When the practitioner takes your pulse, he is feeling the state of balance or imbalance in the doshas.

When you meet a pulse master, he or she will greet you and then place their fingers on your wrist for a few or several seconds. Then the practitioner will

Creamy Broccoli Soup for a Vegetarian Valentine’s Day

If you’re still pondering what to make on Valentine’s Day to balance the chocolate you’re planning to devour, consider this creamy broccoli and sweet potato soup recipe that I created just for you, dear readers! This recipe was born of a desire to take broccoli soup to an unexpected place after finding nothing but broccoli-cheese soup on restaurant menus for decades! And it fits nicely into the niche of hearty soups that can serve as a one-dish meal for busy cooks, with red lentils serving as a protein base.

I use fresh almond milk made in our Vitamix to make it “creamy,” but, of course, you can use

Quick Vegan Meals

Now that itā€™s officially summer, Iā€™ve created a new trio of recipes for you, dear readers: each one easy to make and coolingā€”or at least balancedā€”from an Ayurvedic perspective. Because one thingā€™s for sure: summer invites us all (even working people) to have a little extra time to relax so we can enjoy the balmy breezes or stay cool despite 90-plus degrees as the sun goes down!

Vegan Cilantro Coconut Sauce: For starters, letā€™s begin with cilantro because it is the most cooling of the fresh herbs and serves as an excellent tonic for summer when blended into a sauce. Iā€™ve combined it with coconut cream (or coconut milk, whatever you have available), which is equally cooling and perfect for hot weather.

Blending Cultures for the Jewish New Year!

Today I offer you a must-try recipe for Sweet Mung Pancakes with Stewed Apples. This dish blends ideas from the two cultures I know best: Eastern European Jewish traditions and the Vedic culture of India. How I came to embrace Vedic culture as a Jewish girl from the American south may well be the topic of a book one day, but for now, letā€™s focus on making something both delicious and healthy for the Jewish New Year!

As Jewish people throughout the world began celebrating Rosh Hashanah and the year 5780 at sundown on September 29th, we invoked the blessing of sweetness for the coming year by eating slices of raw apple dipped in honey. Many families will continue serving apples throughout this holy season, which culminates ten days later on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.Ā  In Indiaā€”and wherever people with Indian roots have formed communitiesā€”the mung bean is recognized as one of the most important foods to grace their tables.

All Things Pumpkin 2019

This October Pumpkin Spice Cookie recipe reflects my most recent experimentation with gluten-free baking. Iā€™m happy to say the experiment turned out wellā€”though I regret it was in response to my newest food sensitivity!

Sadly, I seem to have developed an intolerance to nuts, including almond flour. Eating nuts or baked goods with almond flour make me itch. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it makes sense: nuts increase pitta, and high pitta can cause itching. Since nuts are also a common allergen and cause of food intolerance, I decided to explore baking with another high-protein flour for my growing readership.

A Chocolate Loverā€™s Confession

Dear Readers,

I have a confession. Iā€™d never read about the horrible working conditions of cacao farmers who provide cacao beans as a commodity crop to the largest industrial chocolate manufacturers. Until today.

This essay is not meant to be a downer just before Valentineā€™s Day, when so many of us revel in all things chocolate! I am, however, sharing my personal wake-up call, and I was inspired to save you some time searching for the best chocolates that are guilt-free.

Chasing Perfectionism with a Cookie Update

Perhaps I’ve mentioned that I have a tendency to chase perfectionism. For this very reason, I’m updating my OMG Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe to make it easier for vegans and anyone who avoids eggs.

Just to be clear, this recipe is different from the one I first published during this blogā€™s infancy in February 2015. Ever since, I’ve played with the ingredients, revising it more than once. You’ll find a slightly different version in my 2018 book, Sacred & Delicious: A Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook. Then, just last week, I was baking and packing thank-you cookies for several amazing healthcare practitioners who are helping bring my injured hand back to life. I decided the recipe needed one more tweak to make it more accessible for readers.

Vegan Valentine 2021

Today I decided to try making a Vegan Dark Chocolate Pudding, in case my readers are looking for a new dessert on February 14ā€”the joyful (if commercial) holiday of chocolate love. I had never tried making pudding from scratch, the exception being rice pudding (which is also divine). So, I asked Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, to be my coach. The first try was oh so good and Iā€™m happy to share the recipe with all of you!

The Transformative Power of Ayurveda

At the end of 30 days of following the diet recommended by Dr. Mitchell, I had dropped 24 pounds. I continued to do a monthly detox week for four months to improve my overall health. Altogether, Iā€™ve lost 40 to 45 pounds. My follow-up labs showed measurable improvement in cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar/insulin resistance. Itā€™s a confidence booster, for sure. As important, I feel so much better and my overall stamina has improved.

~ Drew Martin, financial analyst from Raleigh, NC

Ā

When I was in my early forties and started experiencing digestive problems and debilitating back pain, I thought this was simply a normal part of aging. My father had an ulcer by the time he was in his mid-thirties and severe arthritis and heart disease followed soon after. It seemed apparent to me that I was going to follow at least some of Dadā€™s DNA tracks.

But I had married Tom a few years earlier, who was in chiropractic school at the time, preparing to embark on a second career that would include becoming an Ayurvedic practitioner and registered herbalist. My husband pointed me toward a new paradigm

SAFE & EASY WEIGHT LOSS WITH AYURVEDA

ā€œI lost 31 pounds over the past year, and I’m feelingĀ terrific!ā€ says Debby W., a Raleigh resident who first started seeing Dr. Tom Mitchell for a pinched nerve and later for chronic pain. After these issues were successfully resolved, DebbyĀ was open toĀ meeting with Vaidya Smita NaramĀ for a broader health assessmentĀ Ā during her first visit to Raleigh in March 2016. Vaidya Naram is a world-renowned pulse master and Ayurvedic physician.

ā€œI was absolutely amazed at what Vaidya Naram told me in that first meeting,ā€Ā Debby says. ā€œShe was right on the money identifying the existing conditions that I know I have just from taking my pulse, but she astounded me with other unexpected recommendations. She suggested that I was prediabetic and needed to eliminate gluten, dairy and sugar from my diet. Dr. Mitchell followed up with comprehensive blood testing to get a complete picture. It turns out that I am indeed prediabetic. However, with nutritional counseling and supplementation from Vaidya Naram and Dr. Mitchell, I have already seen a normalization of my plasma glucose levels and my cholesterol. WooHoo!

ā€œI lost 14 pounds duringĀ the first six weeks when I began following the dietary recommendations and taking some Ayurvedic supplements,ā€ Debby continues,Ā ā€œbut I do not feel deprived at all!ā€

Debby is not a vegetarian, but she started eating more fresh fruit and vegetables along with lean meat and fish for protein. She happily reports that giving up the foods that contributed to chronic pain and becoming prediabetic has been well worth the effort.

ā€œPeople are always saying, ā€˜Don’t you miss eating gluten, dairy and sugar?ā€™Ā and my answer is ā€˜no!ā€™ I’m completely satisfied with my meals. I snack on fruit, nuts and almond butterā€”which is absolutely delicious. I have so much more energy and a positive outlook for my health in the future.Ā  Growing older does not equate to lethargy and weight gain. We have a choice!”

If you’d like to experience a consultation withĀ Dr. Mitchell and Vaidya Smita Naram, call 919-785-2200 and begin your safe weight-loss program. Vaidya Naram is in Raleigh for a pulse assessment clinic Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5. Ā Prior to Raleigh, she will be in clinics in Manhattan, Edison, N.J., and Syracuse, NY. If you wish to schedule an appointment inĀ New York, go toĀ http://ayushakti.eu/ayushaktiusa.com/index.html.
